For Nokia just ended a very challenging quarter and not so gentle to its financial position. The Finnish company is still in the midst of transition and therefore the financial results published earlier , we you could not expect too much: significant drop in global smartphone sales and profits down even contained. However, the data provided are in line with what analysts had expected, and this is probably why the Nokia titles listed in European financial markets are showing excellent performances.
As we know Nokia is not just a company that makes mobile phones and smartphones. It 'also Nokia Siemens Networks, a leading telecommunications companies in the world. In addition, Nokia has also recently emerged as one of the leading global providers in selling services for geo-localization. And in these two areas things are definitely better than the sector as regards the sale of mobile devices that promises the return of positive starting next quarter, thanks to strong sales of the new Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820.
But we move on to the numbers. Nokia has announced an overall loss of 576 million euros, net sales worth 7.2 billion euros, down 19% compared to the same period of the previous operation and 4% lower than the second quarter of 2012. Net cash amounted to 3.5 billion euros, down 30% compared to the same period in 2011 and -15% compared to the previous quarter. So there are losses but tend to decline in comparison to past quarters, and this is definitely a positive for the company.
The mobile devices sold in the months of July, August and September totaled 82.9 million, of which 6.3 are smartphones and the remaining 76.6 million consist of phones and feature phones. The Lumia devices running Windows Phone count for 2.9 million and therefore goes without saying that the other 3.4 million units are smartphones with Symbian OS. If we consider that in the previous quarter smartphone sales totaled 16.8 million and other phones were sold 89.9 million units is clear that in this area Nokia is certainly not in a good position.
